When I was a teenager (not so long ago haha), I suffered due to the lack of plus size fashion options. There were only about three stores that had trendy and affordable fashion in my size, and I cannot tell you how frustrating that was. Nowadays, however, young women have many more options. rue21, an affordable fashion clothing store that caters to young women, now offers trendy plus size clothing as well. Honestly, I could not believe it when I saw the “Plus” section on their website.
rue21, as they mention in their About section, “comes from the French word for 'street' while '21' embodies the age that everyone wants to be!” Their aim is to sell “fashion that’s modern, trendy and affordable,” and that's exactly what I found. Although their clothing caters primarily to the younger generation, there are pieces that “older” women can definitely pull off.
rue21, I have to say, definitely scores a ten in selection, sizing, and affordability. They have trendy pieces like the famous and popular joggers, party dresses perfect for those school dances, jeans that go up to a size 24, activewear, and many other items that make rue21 the perfect destination for us plus size women.
When I was growing up, jean-shopping was my absolute nightmare. As I mentioned in the article “3 Tips to Purchase Jeans If You Are Apple Shaped”, carrying the majority of our weight in the mid area makes it extremely hard to find the right fit. What I liked about rue21 is that they carry a lot of stretchy jeans, like jeggings, that adjust to your curves and give a pretty silhouette.
The dress selection is also very good, and guess what? Their dress sizing, like their jeans, also goes up to a size 24! I'm so used to junior brands only offering up to size 20 or a small 3x that I felt the need to re-emphasize rue21's sizing.
Overall, I was extremely surprised with the selection of clothing. Like I said before – although this is a junior's brand, I think there are pieces that any of us can wear. I cannot wait to visit my nearest store to try on some of these trendy plus size items. So, be prepared for a haul when that happens!
